MLP The Big Apple Family Mixed Media Paper Art

Description

After surviving the infestation of vampire fruitbats (phew!), the core Apple family carts their big apple to the fair!  The family sticks together through thick and thin...

This shadowbox is a charity auction piece for UK PonyCon 2014.  They are raising funds for the Riding for the Disabled Association, or RDA.  The RDA's horses and ponies provide therapy, achievement and enjoyment to people with disabilities all over the UK.

This piece was fun and challenging in new ways.   At 11x14 inches it is the largest shadowbox I have made so far!  The shadowbox has extra depth to it, which allowed me to put many layers on top of one another to really make the Apple family pop to the foreground.  Unlike the previous 3-D paper art, this introduces a few mixed media elements as well.  Apple Bloom's ribbon is actually ribbon.  Granny Smith's scarf is made from some leftover fabric, with tiny little red beads hand-sewn on to represent the apple pattern on her scarf.  Her wiry hair has a few unruly pieces of scraggly white yarn.  The boards of the apple cart are drawn onto the cart.  And, the path on which they trek is textured using limestone spray paint.  Everything else is just paper that has been gently bent, folded, and layered together to make a composition!  I keep the design and color palette simple to allow lighting to create natural shadows and depth.

Your shadowboxes are beautiful, elathera! :)

I love the many details you included and also how you mixed other materials to the paper. Is the light reflection on the apple also paper, or is it rubberfoam?

Your shadow boxes are awesome and I really want to put "shadow boxes" on my to do list on forms of art I want to try out myself. Thank you for being so inspirational! :)
